    How We Got Started:

We have come together, just a couple of neighborhood people and have decided that we need to take some action on the crippling opiate/heroin epidemic that is progressively getting worse with each passing second, ruining our neighborhood streets. People are suffering in silence because of the stigma that is attached to addiction, that shame label, sitting around waiting, praying that it will soon subside on its own. We have come to the realization that it’s not going anywhere. Not this.

In order to raise awareness, to bring this heart wrenching epidemic to light, we have decided to form a 5K race in our own neighborhood. People are suffering every day. People are dying in the very streets we grew up in, the streets that we plan to raise our children in. What’s it going to look like for the next generation if we don’t start taking some serious action? With the help of you all, maybe we can make a difference. Maybe we can change the path for this destructive lifestyle that our everyday people are being caught up in. We can start by making an effort to make this change happen and we feel like running in the streets of our community to raise awareness is a perfect start.

We talked about a name. What would we call this? “The Pink Elephant.” We wanted to pick something unique, something that would draw attention to this project, something that had real meaning behind what we were trying to accomplish. The Pink Elephant in the room, the obvious that is occurring but no one seems to want to talk about. Ignoring this will solve nothing. It will keep people in denial. It will enable this to continue. It will not go away.

We believe it is truly important that we all come together as a community on this to make a positive change for our neighborhoods. We invite anyone who is interested to please join us in shedding light on this epidemic in hopes of making a difference.
